One day, the daughter of a 93-year-old patient reached out to me concerned about her 93-year-old dad.
His arms were swollen and darkened from more than 10 years of cancer treatment, even though his cancer was under control. It brought constant discomfort in his arms, persistent fatigue, and a lot of questions about his obviously swollen arms.
They tried medicines and “arm sleeves” from online store, but nothing helped. For years, he endured this suffering without a proper diagnosis.
My story
Imagine his immense relief when he finally learned that there was a diagnosis for his suffering, and more importantly, a pathway to manage this effectively. I was hesitant to introduce bandaging, knowing that even my youngest patient couldn’t stand the inconveniences and layers of bandages under the hot sun of Malaysia.
But he proved me wrong and surprised me by becoming my best patient. With his dedication, we reduced his swelling by 2 kilograms. Imagine carrying around 2 kilograms of extra weight in your arms every day.
Sadly, he passed away a month later, only having learned about lymphedema in the last year of his life.
Knowing that many more patients may still be suffering in silence without knowing there’s help pains me deeply. He wasn’t the first patient I saw suffering for years without proper treatment.
I hope Flow Rehab can make a difference.
I want it to help more Malaysians, especially busy moms and older folks who struggle with appointments yet don’t want to bother their families.
Most importantly, I want more Malaysians to know about lymphedema and get the right treatment they truly deserve
